Your Beginner Guide to Marijuana Strains

In the United States, cannabis use is increasing. A 2018 study found that while teens have decreased their cannabis use, Americans are increasing the amount of cannabis they use on a daily basis.

Forbes reports that the global cannabis industry is valued at $7.7 billion. It’s projected to hit $31.4 billion by 2021.

This is partly due to the fact that cannabis can be used as a multi-purpose medication. Many research studies have demonstrated that cannabis is capable of treating a range of medical conditions such as anxiety, chronic pain and epilepsy.

However, all marijuana is not created equal, and this is something that any medical or recreational cannabis user will be able to tell you. Different cannabis strains produce different effects and can therefore be used for different purposes.

If marijuana is legal in your state and you’re looking to try it, but not sure which strains best suit your needs, we’ve got you covered. Below is a guide to the best marijuana strains.

If you’ve read a little about marijuana, or if you enter most dispensaries, you might see the words indica, sativa, and hybrid. Most people categorize marijuana into one of these three types.

Indica, which comes from India’s Hindu Kush mountains is said to have a relaxing affect on users. Sativa is more energetic, while hybrid has both.

Industry experts are now reexamining the indica, Sativa, and Hybrid categories. Amos Elberg of Confident Cannabis is the head of data science and says these terms have less or no meaning.

“We see samples of all cannabis products tested through our partner labs, and when we look at all the data, particularly of the chemical makeup of flower, we see no identifiable characteristics that are consistent with indica, sativa, or hybrid,” he explains.

“Essentially people are using these terms as catchalls for effect, but they’re not all consistent with those effects. Some indica makes some people wired, not couch-locked, for instance.”

In other words, people shouldn’t be alarmed if a reportedly energizing sativa strain has more of a mellowing effect, or if an indica strain makes them feel more bubbly and excitable.

Dispensaries may also divide cannabis into sativa, indica, and hybrid strains. Strains are essentially different breeds of cannabis, and they’re bred to have specific effects on the user.

However, the terms hybrid, indica, and sativa are not useful categorizations. Are strain names meaningless?

Elberg says that it is not.

“Not all seeds that are sold under the same name are genetically identical, or even necessarily related. Some producers may choose to create a strain name essentially as a branding exercise, or to identify their product with an existing name because they believe the product matches characteristics the market expects from product sold under that name,” Elberg explains.

Elberg says that there are still consistency among products sold under certain strain names.

“In general, for the less common names, product sold by different vendors tends to be pretty consistent,” he notes. “For the most common strain names, however, a wider variety of different products are sold.”

Quality products should have more consistency if they are purchased from a reliable source. Keep in mind that everyone reacts to cannabis differently.

It all depends on the effect you want. Although cannabis can be used for a variety of medical purposes, some strains work better in certain situations than others.

It’s also worth researching the potential adverse effects of the strain. You can see below that many of the most common strains list side effects such as dry mouth, dry eyes and dizziness. You might also find marijuana can interact with other medications. When using marijuana, do not operate machinery.

Talk to your doctorIf you’re interested in trying cannabis, and you’re looking to help treat a medical condition or currently taking any medications, speak with your doctor first.
